British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
